The Healthcare Issue

May, 2018

I warn you not to fall ill,” Labour leader Neil Kinnock said of his election rival, the Conservative Margaret Thatcher, in 1983. “And I warn you not to grow old.” Thatcher won a landslide victory, and Conservative underfunding and mismanagement left the NHS in parlous health.

Kinnock’s omens would not be misplaced in China, where hospitals are infamously oversubscribed and underwhelming. It’s not just the queues, short tempers, and overstretched specialists. According to Pew research conducted between 2008 and 2015, the percentage of those who consider “safety of medicine,” seniors’ insurance, and healthcare a “very big worry” rose from 8, 13, and 12 percent respectively to 28, 33, and 25 percent.

The government has promised comprehensive insurance by 2020, with further reforms to come. To assess its progress, TWOC visited a purpose-built “health city” in 2010, and again today, to see how the market has adapted to the needs of an aging population. Meanwhile, one writer pens a moving and revelatory diary of her grandfather’s last days—a story as much about the heart as healthcare.

In other pages, we revisit the infamous “human flesh search,” reveal that China’s “bubble tea” wars are real and raging (as are the craft-beer battles), assess the rise of vegetarianism, and visit Hainan’s coconut country. All this—and more—inside.
